Favorite thing about having diabetes: I am forever grateful for the wonderful people I have met and the many enriching experiences I have had, especially in the community of diabetics and friends doing their best to live full and active lives. Because of the profound effect that exercise has on my insulin sensitivity, having diabetes has helped motivate me to continue staying active and to take care of my health.
"When I was diagnosed with diabetes, I was told there were only a couple things I could never do: 'scuba dive and hang glide.' I took care of the hang gliding in 1993 and imagine I will get around to scuba diving at some point. My motto over the years has been to reach for my goals, stubbornly if necessary, despite having diabetes or other challenges.

I didn't go off to a faraway college, run marathons, learn to sail, etc., in order to prove anything, but because they were my dreams and joys. In 2005, I qualified for the Boston Marathon after 10 attempts, and in 2006, I returned back to my college town to complete the Boston Marathon as a qualified runner and with a small group of other type 1 athletes. After a couple years of triathlon, I entered Ironman Coeur d'Alene, which I completed in 2007 and 2008. Also, it was my profound pleasure to train & race with 11 other type 1 athletes in the 2008 Ironman Wisconsin as part of Triabetes, and I look forward to future adventures with this group. I am always interested in learning more about exercise physiology in the diabetic athlete, and hope that continued research and collaborations in this area (as well as the deep-felt camaraderie we share in the type 1 athlete community) can help all of us to reach our best."
