Insulindependence

Who We Are
Insulindependence, Inc. is a worldwide project aimed at changing diabetic lives through fitness, adventure travel, educational outreach, and web-based community support. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit public benefit corporation based in San Diego, California.

Our Mission
Inspired by a vision to redefine “insulin dependency,” Insulindependence operates through a global network of outdoor enthusiasts working together in an effort to promote healthy, proactive lifestyles to diabetics lacking financial resources, positive role models and/or adequate guidance in professional healthcare.
Insulindependece recognizes the dismal lack of leadership for people with diabetes, particularly in the areas of fitness and recreation.  Where health institutions have failed to keep up with the rampant growth of diabetes, we aim to provide a community talent pool for the sharing of old and development of new diabetes management strategies.
It is our foremost belief that diabetes is not an inhibiting condition with regard to high-level activity; our very existence is a refutation of the traditional view that moderation is the sole means to good glucose control. We propose that extreme forms of activity actually precede stability in blood-sugar levels, a trend attributable to the cycle of inspiration that begins with the decision to push beyond the limits of convention.

Our Services
Insulindependence believes that, as members of the diabetic community, our most effective and influential system of support is that community itself.  By tracking and sharing our experiences we learn for ourselves and counsel each other in ways that stimulate self-growth and understanding, neither of which can be found on the same scale in a doctor’s office or medical journal.  Each Insulindependence program creates a new meeting place for people with diabetes and similar interests:

Online Networking.  As advances in computer and medical technology continue to improve, Insulindependence will further develop its integrated, web-based social network for individuals interested in learning more about diabetes management within their respective fields of interest.  The premise is to provide an
effective starting point for fellowship, communication and strategy
development for people with diabetes.

International Teen Expedition Program.  Insulindependence is continually seeking type-1 adolescents of formidable character who have demonstrated strength in spirit, but have lost hope in their personal struggle with diabetes. Because we are primarily interested in “changing lives,” the program is not designed to award stand-out individuals for their personal achievements. Instead, we offer guidance where it is most desperately needed, to those whom we consider to be just one adventure away from gaining control of their lives.

International Adult Expeditions.  Just as children with diabetes need each other’s guidance and support, so too do adults.  In response to such a need, Insulindependence contracts regular expeditions through Wilderness Inquiry, an award-winning non-profit adventure company specializing in people with disabilities.  Trip activities vary by destination, but may include paddling, hiking, camping or dog sledding.

Team Training.  For those who have been inspired by others’ stories of athletic achievement, we facilitate online group training for individuals interested in joining Team Insulindependence at selected endurance events.  In most cases, Insulindependence will provide logistical support surrounding the events, along with additional team activities to enhance and complete the group training process.  Throughout event preparation, team members learn to coach each other alongside Insulindependence’s Team Trainer, who is highly specialized in diabetes and exercise.

Online Educational Resources.  Insulindependence strives to be the world’s number one resource for people interested in learning more about participating in activity x while living a healthy life with diabetes.  Under the supervision of our Chief Academic Advisor, we are continually gathering and filtering the most useful, practically applicable information for the diabetic community.

Public Speaking.  As an organization dedicated to educational and inspirational outreach, we are experienced in providing professional public speaking in a wide variety of settings.  Recognizing the strong parallels between diabetes and life's many other challenges, the leaders of Insulindependence effectively engage audiences of any kind, infusing them with a message of Hope generated from their distinctive experiences.
