Athletic Achievement Award – $5,000
This award was originally presented by the Diabetes Exercise and Sports Association (DESA), prior to their merge with Insulindependenece in 2012. The Athletic Achievement Award has recognized outstanding accomplishments of some of the most inspirational athletes living with diabetes since 1996. In 2013, Insulindependence is bringing it back to encourage members of the diabetes community to share their athletic achievements with the community, and encourage public dialogue regarding the importance of diabetes and exercise.
After a public voting campaign, the three finalists who have distinguished themselves as role models for healthy living will be invited to the Greatest Awards Show in Diabetes at the San Diego House of Blues, where the winner will be announced and awarded $5,000 to support future athletic endeavors.

Paula and Lew Harper Collegiate Scholarship – $1,000
This award is named in honor of DESA’s founder, Paula Harper, her late husband Lew, and their lifelong commitment to supporting next generations of leadership in the diabetes. Insulindependence selects one most promising high school senior, who plans to take on the challenge of higher education as a collegiate athlete.
Dr. Nathaniel Heintzman Type 3 of the Year
This award is named in honor of Insulindependence’s first Board Chair, whose tireless volunteer efforts helped Insulindependence to become a leading organization in diabetes and exercise. Dr. Heintzman does not live with diabetes, yet his commitment embodies his true understanding of the importance of our collective struggle for a better life. The Dr. Nathaniel Heintzman Type 3 of the Year Award symbolizes his empathy and spirit. Insulindependence extends this honor annually to the most supportive diabetes caregiver within our wonderful community.
Return with Honor Award
The Return with Honor Award was first presented to honor John W. Moore’s leadership during the early years of our organizational development. Since 2007, John has served as an Insulindependence volunteer, staff member and Board Member. Each year, the Return with Honor Award is given annually to an individual within our organization who has demonstrated steadfast integrity in support of our mission.
Cure Jesse Award
The Cure Jesse Award was named in honor of Michelle Alswager’s late son Jesse, whose life with diabetes inspired the vision behind Insulindependence’s Triabetes Documentary Project in 2008. This honor is given annually to an individual whose innovative vision marks a valuable contribution to the active diabetes community.
IN Champion Award
Insulindependence is proud to honor corporate leaders who follow their heart. The first IN Champion Award recipient was Charles Renfroe at LifeScan, who–throughout his career–went well beyond the call of duty as a corporate philanthropist. Each year, Insulindependence recognizes one corporate individual who embodies this spirit and passion for our cause, with a deep concern for the broader diabetes patient community.
