Peter Nerothin
President & Founder
Peter Nerothin is the President and Founder of Insulindependence, and the visionary behind Insulindependence’s unique and innovative program development. Peter graduated with a B.A. in Financial Economics from Gustavus Adolphus College (St. Peter, MN) one year after being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Intrigued by the process of learning as it applied to diabetes management, he spent the next six years exploring various models of education as he continued to develop the philosophical basis and institutional framework for Insulindependence. Peter has worked in traditional education as an Americorps Volunteer (Minneapolis, 2002-03) and Teach for America Corps Member (Phoenix, 2007); studied in higher education (Classical and Near Eastern Studies, University of Minnesota, 2004-06); and received formal training and certifications in outdoor leadership (Wilderness Inquiry; Natonal Outdoor Leadership School, 2006-07). These experiences, along with his accomplishments as a world explorer and ultra endurance athlete (formally recognized by the Diabetes Exercise & Sports Association, 2005), have shaped Insulindependence’s experiential learning programs since the organization was founded in 2005. Peter continues to spearhead community program development based on Educational Philosopher John Dewey’s assertion that “education is essentially a social process.” He looks forward to pursuing his Ph.D. and bringing public awareness to the field of Experiential Diabetes Education, which was developed by Insulindependence as a complement to traditional health care. Peter divides his time between San Diego, CA and Denver, CO. |
